🌱 Beyond Advice: Why Life Coaching Creates the Kind of Personal Growth That Lasts

When people hear the word coaching, they often assume it’s about getting advice. I know — that’s what I used to think too.

And let’s be honest: scroll through social media and you’ll find coaches promising to help you optimise, manifest, heal, and transform fat from your backside into your sagging face in a minute (LOL — if only transformation worked that fast!). It can feel like the coaching world is one giant selfhelp buffet.

But here’s the twist: my path to life coaching and self development didn’t come from a glossy Instagram ad. It came from loss, change, and the kind of life shakeup that makes you wonder if the universe accidentally shuffled your script with someone else’s.

When Life Falls Apart (And You’re Still Expected to Show Up)

At the time, I was navigating the loss of both my parents, the end of my marriage, a brother who emigrated, and close friends who had moved away. Basically, my support system packed its bags and left me staring at the ceiling wondering: now what?

I’d drive to work and wonder how I was going to make it through the day. I felt stuck. Left behind. Invisible. Within a short space of time, it felt to me like I had turned from a highly motivated and engaged member of society into someone messy, angry, and afraid of almost everything.

And layered on top of that was shame. I felt an immense sense of shame about where I was in my life. I tried to hide it from others, and in hiding it, I isolated myself even more. Shame has a way of convincing us that we’re alone in our struggle, when in reality, it’s one of the most human experiences there is.

As the saying goes: everything is fine… until it isn’t.

And when it isn’t, advice alone won’t save you. What I needed was space — space to hear myself again.

That was my introduction to coaching. Not as a profession. As a lifeline.

Happiness vs. Meaning (Spoiler: One Is More Reliable)

One of the biggest lessons I learned was that happiness isn’t permanent. It comes and goes — like South African weather in spring.

Meaning, though? Meaning sticks around. Meaning can coexist with heartbreak. Meaning can survive loss. Meaning gives us a reason to keep building, even when the picture isn’t finished yet.

Here’s the real shift: when we find meaning and purpose, everything changes because we anchor ourselves to our essential self — not the “society self.” Anchoring to the society self is like building a house on quicksand. You can chase goals, tick boxes, and collect achievements, but if they’re not rooted in who you truly are, they sink.

Anchoring to your essential self, however, is like planting roots into solid ground. It holds you steady through storms, and from that foundation, growth becomes not only possible but lasting.

Coaching helped me realise that while we can’t always choose happiness, we can choose meaning. And when you know what matters most, happiness often sneaks in through the side door anyway.

Why Advice Rarely Creates Personal Growth That Lasts

Here’s the thing: advice informs us. Discovery transforms us.

I have no interest in changing you. My job is to help you be exactly who you want to be, not who society tells you you should be.

Coaching works because it doesn’t hand you someone else’s answers. It asks questions — thoughtful ones that make you pause, squirm a little, and then suddenly see things differently.

Neuroscience backs this up: our brains create new pathways when we generate our own insights. That’s why coaching feels different from mentoring or consulting. It’s not about being told what to do. It’s about reclaiming your own wisdom. Simple "advice" rarely creates personal growth that lasts.

Why Feeling Heard Changes Everything

Most of us spend our lives reacting. Rarely do we stop to reflect. Coaching creates a rare kind of conversation — one without an agenda. A space where curiosity replaces judgment.

I once heard Oprah say that in all the interviews she ever did, she knew for sure that the one thing everyone wanted was to be heard — to tell their story, to have someone witness them, and to feel like their lives matter. That truth has stayed with me.

Because isn’t that what we all want? To know that our voice counts. That our story matters. That we are not invisible.

Often the breakthrough in coaching isn’t about finding an answer. It’s about finally hearing yourself clearly — maybe for the first time. And when you can hear yourself clearly, you can begin creating the map that guides you forward.

The Neuroscience of Growth (Yes, Science Agrees With Your Gut)

Reflective thinking activates the brain’s problemsolving centres. Compassionate conversations reduce stress. Visualising a desired future strengthens neural pathways.

Even small behavioural changes, practised consistently, reshape the brain over time. That’s not just theory — I lived it. Small shifts in perspective led to different choices. Different choices created different experiences. And those experiences shaped a future I couldn’t have imagined during those difficult years.

And here’s the important part: coaching isn’t about a textbook. My approach is founded on principles with scientific backing because I believe people deserve triedandtrusted methods that equip them with skills for a lifetime. But it’s not a onesizefitsall hammer for every nail. In our sessions, we can explore anything from neuroscience to “woowoo” spiritual practices — because growth is personal, and the right mix is different for everyone.

Why Life Coaching Matters in South Africa (Right Now)

Many South Africans are navigating economic uncertainty, career pressure, family responsibilities, and major life transitions. People aren’t just looking for success. They’re looking for clarity. Purpose. Resilience. Connection.

And while these challenges are universal, South Africa carries its own unique weight: unemployment, genderbased violence, and income inequality add another layer to the load. We are a tough bunch — resilient, resourceful, and determined — but sometimes the macro issues we face as a country make personal struggles feel heavier. Life Coaching South Africa offers a way to build resilience against both the personal and the systemic, reconnecting us with meaning even when the bigger picture feels overwhelming.

That’s why life coaching here matters more than ever.

Reconnect With What Matters Most

If you’re navigating a life transition, experiencing loss, feeling overwhelmed, or simply sensing that there must be more to life than just getting through the week — coaching can help.

Not because a coach will tell you what to do. But because the right conversation can help you reconnect with who you are, what you value, and what gives your life meaning.

Because while happiness comes and goes, meaning has the power to carry us through every season of life.
